...if so, why didn't they call this v1.0.1 b1? I agree -- in my years of developing software, i've never heard of such a lengthy trajectory of confused releases.

Yeah...I'm not getting it. Worse they have actually added NEW FEATURES! So it's not a 1.0.1 but a 1.1...you never add features, even lame ones like this, to what should be a bug fix release. OMG...why do I bother with this, this is 4 min I can't get back!
