This software doesn't actually "dim your screen" it rather puts a black window over everything resulting in everything beneath getting darker also taking cpu/gpu to render!

True, but it works, it definitely softens the bright straining glow and from difficult viewing angles it makes whites (which have a tendency to turn yellowish) whiter.About the CPU usage:
When altering the brightness with this program the CPU goes up, 30% CPU max, for a second, but once you have set the desired brightness (or better darkness) with this program, the program doesn't use any CPU*
And with this new set brightness level you no longer need to alter the brightness with this program, you can use OSX's built-in brightness control with it.
Similar programs like DarkAdapted and Shades, use at least 0,5% CPU all the time.
Screenshade uses 0.
*The CPU only goes up for a second or two, when logging in or coming from a slide show or full-screen video, then it eats 5% CPU which is much less than Shades, which has a CPU peak of 80 when logging in.
