Upgrade pricing ($39) applies only to those upgrading from version 7. For the rest of us, it's as if they don't know us.

Less than generous upgrade offer - Helen_Brown_560

Program upgrades are free within a major version. We charge only for each major version and discount from the previous version.

When you come to upgrade your CD-ROMs and the texts and tools you have purchased, we honor all our users, and scale the upgrade pricing depending on what you already have. Mostly it's nominal unless there are significant additional contents or other factors.

Which is my precise point. If you have version 7, you pay $39. Everyone else pays full price -- $49.

You may consider this "nominal" but I don't.

No, by nominal I meant the $10 or so that we charge for new CD-ROMs when you already own the content. This version involved many hours of development, and we need to see some return on that. Like most software companies we cannot offer indefinite upgrade deals on everything. Even Apple charges the same to everyone for a system upgrade, only $129.

And the Omnigroup charges the same upgrade price for Omnigraffle from version 1 to 5 as from version 4 to 5.

I was considering upgrading from the rather clunky Accordance version 6 that I'm currently using, but don't feel it's worth $49. Your business model doesn't appear to place much value on rewarding customer loyalty. Rather than losing $10 by offering a discounted upgrade path, you'd apparently prefer to get $0 when customers choose not to upgrade at all.

"Rewarding customer loyalty" is a bit of a double-edged sword. Our most loyal customers are those who upgraded from version 6 to 7, and who now are upgrading again from 7 to 8. Yet as it is, you're only having to pay $49 to upgrade from 6 to 8, where they paid a total of $68 ($29 plus $39) to upgrade from 6 to 8. You seem to see us as begrudging you a ten dollar discount, but it strikes me that you are actually begrudging them that ten dollar price break. We make every effort to be as fair as possible with our upgrade strategy, and to offer enhancements which are of far greater value than the prices we charge. I'm sorry if you don't consider that to be the case.

Frankee,
I am also a "loyal user" who has paid for every upgrade of Accordance since version 3. Every version upgrade was well worth its price in terms of new features and enhancements. When I consider the hundreds or even thousands of hours that have gone into the development of the application, I have never balked at the modest upgrade fees. Many software companies have graduated upgrade paths similar to OakSoft. If you really feel that the program is not worth the $49 to upgrade, then don't buy it. You can still use version 6 (which was never "clunky"), although you will miss out on some tremendous features that we implemented in versions 7 and 8. However, I am convinced that if you did purchase the update, you would soon discover it to be money well invested.
Best regards,
Ron

Then you wrote:

So which are you? A loyal user or one of the developers?

Yes, it was an "oops." That was a typo that was supposed to read "You can still use version 6 (which was never "clunky"), although you will miss out on some tremendous features that WERE implemented in versions 7 and 8."

I am just a loyal user and not in any way affiliated with the folks at Accordance. I noticed the error after I submitted the post, but VersionTracker doesn't allow editing once posted.

I hope by now you've discovered that the value of the updates far exceeds the few dollars you pay for the newest versions.

Best regards,

Ron
