Introducing GEO I/O

Feedback Type:  Developer Note

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Over One Year

Version 1.6 of IP Locator allows users to choose between HostIP.info and GEO I/O for geolocation information.

I added this because I have had some feedback that HostIP.info's database is lacking (though you can improve it by adding your location!). GEO I/O, in my testing, has a bit better coverage, though it's not perfect either.

One downside to GEO I/O is that if your location isn't correct, you can't change it easily. Another is that they limit an account to 1000 queries per day. With over 13,000 downloads, it's possible we could run up against that limit. HostIP.info uses an open source model where users can update any inaccuracies and there is no limit on usage, which is the main reason it's the default. Viva open source!

Anyway, I thought it better to let users choose than to force one solution on everyone. I'd be interested to hear people's reaction to this decision. Also, if there is another free service I can add, let me know.

Introducing GEO I/O - Jeff Mincey

In my experience, GEO is the much more accurate source of IP locations. It would be one thing if HostIP simply returned a null value or "Unknown" for a percentage of IP addresses; but instead it often returns an inaccurate location.

We need to be able to trust the results we get from this tool or it won't be worth using.
