Why do you expect an upgrade to run necessarily faster than a previous version? You have to consider feature set, development environment, etc., in order to do a proper comparison.
This is a completely new beast from version 2.

Why would someone expect an upgrade to run faster?

Perhaps because the developer had been talking about how the new version would use OpenGL for faster smoother animation?

I have considered the feature set, and apart from the new UI and new plottable items, there don't appear to be that many new features. The one feature I was looking forward too - smoother animation isn't there. It even grinds on this 2Gig core 2 duo. Perhaps Adobe will optimize AIR more in the future, but in the meantime I don't see a very compelling reason to upgrade from 2 to 3.

AIR runs HORRIBLY slow on the PPC G4 -- hence all AIR apps are extremely pokey. AIR is a terrible choice for this app, it's a big speed hit.

Most developers, including M$, still don't get it...

Interesting, I see lots of new capabilities: display and forecast of rainfall, temperature, wind speed/direction/, pressure, ozone, radar precititation, customizable elements, such as the ISS plots, aurora activity, etc. To me (and I guess to many others), these are "that many features".
