Mike answered my email and suggested deleting Safari's preferences(~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist) and it WORKED.
Back to happy user of Pith Helmet.
You'll wonder how you got by without it.

Yes, I have been stopped in my tracks by this same exact error and problem.Alerted Mike, I hope he has some comment or fix.
I've been using it since Day One, paid user, and I'm dependent on it!
I also deleted all files mentioned in the README as remotely related to PithHelmet's operation, no dice.
I'm 10.5.2 Safari 3.1.1
My advice is before you install 2.8.3 you might try the workaround described here:

It worked flawlessly for me on another of my Macs.
