Instead of making this an easy update (wherein the installer simply searches/checks your system for Keynote 4.0.2 and then does the update), Apple has set this update to check a specific file location (../Applications/iWork '08). If the installer doesn't find the app in that exact location, no update. This is aggravating and completely unnecessary. Many, many users choose not to keep their application in an iWork '08 folder. It's bad enough that Adobe buries its apps in a mindless hierarchy of folders, does Apple really need to follow this example?
The aggravation/confusion/wasted time is compounded by the fact Apple hasn't bothered to provide any documentation (with the installer or on its Support page) to explain this silly implementation.

Not Apple's best implementation... - Kevin Browne
Keeping your applications in your Applications Folder is hardly a 'nonstandard place'. Few users want their applications mired in a hierarchy of folders. Most want quick, direct access within the Applications folder. How do I want the updater to find it? The same way 99.9% of the other updaters (including the majority of Apple's apps) do it. By identifying the application, determining the version, and proceeding to update it. Setting the updater to look for a specific path is regressing to the 1990s.

"OTOH, what's a really good reason for changing the default location/folder other than just being a contrarian?

If you move an application to a nonstandard place, how do you wantthe updater to find it. Best advice: if you moc=ve it,make a symlink to the original location!
