Decent, not great...

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Over One Year

I have used EndNote for several years, and I have to say I am disappointed overall.

They often come out with a new version instead of an update, which could be more appropriate. You can easily see that they rarely issue an update for any version, rather, they come out with a "new version" which costs $50 or $100 or more for an upgrade.

I will keep using the version I have until it absolutely stops working, rather than pay for upgrades. By contrast, I use Roxio's Toast program, and even though I am two versions behind, they issued an update for my older version (7) that resolved an issue burning discs in Leopard.

There are also a few serious problems with EndNote: it does not automatically backup your database, and there is no undo function. I once selected all my references and accidentally hit delete, and they were permanently removed with no way to reverse this action (luckily, I do have a regular backup of my whole system). It is also hard to work with references flexibly (I often just want to cut and paste a reference into an email, but the only way to do this is to select a reference and export it as a text file, then open it and paste it. This despite the fact that when I click on a reference there is a preview window where I can see exactly what I want, but cut and paste is disabled—why???).

This could be a great program if they were more attentive to their customers, and provided better updates instead of upgrades.

I doubt this guy knows what he is talking about - grayw

I cut and paste formatted citations into email all of the time. 1. Select citation(s) in the endnote window 2. keyboard: Apple-K 3. Select space in email 4. keyboard: command-V (paste) Voila!! Simon, H. A. (1956). Rational choice and the structure of the environment. Psychological Review, 63, 129–138. This is such a basic function of EndNotes (I have used this function ever since 1993 or something like that) that I really wonder about the reviewer's knowledge and use of EndNotes. I have EndNotes open almost continually, download 2-10 cites per day. Use cite-while-you-write whenever Word is open (now that is a product that I love to hate!), format about 20 papers per year using it, use it to store my personal notes on a paper, and use it as a library to organize and store all of my pdfs on papers.
