Wonder why so few readers found this comment helpful? Like the OP, I'd also like to know if Smart Utility's predictive algorithms actually provide valid earlier (impending failure) notification; albeit, at a fee versus this app's freeware status which I assume uses the same routine as what's already part of the OS and available via Disk Utility.

As a Mac consultant, I like SmartReporter's emailing function. However, I don't think its predictive capability is anywhere near SMART Utility's. I've had SU warn me of numerous drives that were starting to suffer from bad blocks, where Disk Utility and, presumably Smart Reporter, don't give any hint till the spare blocks have been exhausted. And 80-90% of the drive failures I deal with are due to bad blocks.
