Scared off by the user comments I've avoided the 3.0 -> 4.0 upgrade so far.
Has anybody tried 4.02 or 4.03 to see if the problems are fixed?

I have not tried it, although most of the problems I experienced seem to have been fixed. I contacted Kristian after having an awful experience with version 4.0, and soon after that 4.01 was out. It has definitely improved since version 4.0http://www.iwascoding.com/GarageSale/versionHistory.php
