There is still not full compatibility between Mac OSX and Windows versions of Powerpoint files.

Using for example a Powerpoint 2007 file created by a PC user, importanting on a Mac running Powerpoint 2008 (rel 12) I can tell you that many fonts in the Mac version are very badly displayed!

Compatibility problems (Mac vs. PC) - drtimothyjames

I'm having the same problem. I teach, and my lectures are in PowerPoint slides that took me a long time to create. It gets embarrassing to suddenly see my slides look shoddy. Even worse, in many instances, I'm using a Times New Roman font. How can PowerPoint possibly screw that up? But it does.

Compatibility problems (Mac vs. PC) - pendragon

After checking with the M$ MBU and being assured that Office 2004 and Office 2008 can live together in harmony on the same volume, I gave it go.

And right they were (and they can both be opened at the same time).

Yes, I too have PPT font/pagination issues (even Times New Roman) when 2004 PPT files are opened in 2008, but as I can still show (or burn) them from 2004 (with no issues), well, at least I have a workaround.

Reinstalling 2004 with all the updaters is a pain, and may take 30-45 minutes, but it may be easier than redoing all the old 2004 PPT files.

HTH
