Does not inspire confidence

Feedback Type:  Commentary

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: NO

Seems like this initial release for OSX has quite a few glitches that will need to be addressed. At this point this app does not inspire much confidence.
In addition, I don't think that this is going to be the cross-platform encryption panacea that everyone is hoping for... Example: If you have a TrueCrypt volume from a previous release which is in NTFS format then you will not have write access to it under TruCrypt on OSX !

Does not inspire confidence - Westside guy

This isn't a TrueCrypt problem per se, though, since OS X doesn't have NTFS write support built into it.

However I'd think you could use MacFuse and the NTFS filesystem support to "fix" this problem, in any case.

In-fact the Mac version of TrueCrypt does include the MacFuse framework as part of the installation. Unfortunately, the Mac section of the TrueCrypt.org forum has several messages indicating an inability to mount or write TrueCrypt NTFS volumes under OSX. Hopefully those reports are not indicative of an actual lack of NTFS support in the Mac version, but that is how I am interpreting them at this point.
There are also reports of the app failing to launch, possibly due to a failure to package the installer script correctly...

This is not a problem with TrueCrypt. Mac OS X can't write to NTFS volumes.

Use a different filesystem and you'll be fine.

That doesn't do much to help the rather large user-base of Windows users who have TC volumes that they can't fully use with the Mac version of TC despite claims in the TC FAQ that "TrueCrypt volumes are fully cross-platform."

ntfs-3g with macfuse works really well with TrueCrypt. I've been flawlessly editing read/write encrypted NTFS file systems that way. Next time, try using Google before posting a negative rating.

I still stand behind my negative rating of TrueCrypt, especially as it pertains to cross-platform use. The product does not do what is advertised on the tin. The average user should not have to mess around with additional components just to be able to use an existing TC volume with the Mac version of TC.

Good to know that Truecrypt+ntfs-3g works. BTW, saying "next time try Google" is obnoxious when you've said nothing to contradict the other guy. Actually, it's obnoxious even if you had.
