Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Over One Year

Recommend Product: NO

I purchased the version 9.7 upgrade to PGP Desktop Home on December 20th, when it was first released. Today, February 7th, version 9.8 is cleverly released more than 30 days after version 9.7. The point version update is another $99.00. No thanks. If it was version 10 that would be different. I can't see paying $99.00 every month for something that crashes on its first launch after login, every time.

How do you figure this is a free update? No links allowing me to download the update, checking for updates in the app shows none available, and when you check on the site for upgrade eligibility it's says no. I'll be damned to fork over another $99 after one month since the last update!

Jamespa1 is correct. It appears to be another boinking courtesy of PGP, but this one really takes the cake! Two months old and they want another $100.00! No way!

Updating from the PGP app doesn't get you 9.8 and entering your 9.7 serial number doesn't get you 9.8 either. I just tried.

They should be embarrassed for being such crooks. I guess it's time for GPG.

Did you try actually going to their site and clicking on the link that says "click here to determine upgrade eligibility" and then follow the instructions?

It might be worth complaining to Customer Support. I did. I'm not expecting much, but if enough people complain, maybe they'll rethink their update policy and/or update release schedule.

Hold off on those complaints to Customer Support. I received a prompt reply with good news:

PGP> Thank you for contacting PGP Corporation's Customer Service
PGP> Department.
PGP>
PGP> Management is already aware of the situation for desktop home
PGP> users and are currently in the process of updating the site so that
PGP> home users that have 9.7 can upgrade to 9.8 for free. The
PGP> estimated time when this free upgrade for 9.7 home users is
PGP> Monday around noon. To upgrade just go to www.pgp.com and
PGP> click "upgrade now to the latest PGP products" on the lower
PGP> portion of that sites home page. Again this won't be available until
PGP> Monday but you will have the option to upgrade for free.

I purchased PGP Desktop Home 9.7 on 12/27/07. I followed the link, as well:

Our records indicate your PGP Desktop Home 9.7 for Mac OS X product is not eligible for an upgrade or promotion.

Amazing. I realize that they clearly told us that we wouldn't be eligible for any updates released more than 30 days after purchase, but come on. Releasing an update just 50 days? That's just rude.
