Pixelmator is a great light-weight alternative to Photoshop for hobbyists. It's fast and elegant and offers most features you'll need. A few things (like more supported formats) would be great for upcoming versions, but apart from that I have only a few complaints: the German localisation is not always consistent and sometimes wrong, and the developers should seriously re-think the idea of black or dark-grey symbols on a black background.
