Gordon from Prosoft here....
I'm looking at our website, www.prosoftengineering.com for the quote that you mentioned, but I can't find it.. I wish you would've called into our offices or emailed us. You are looking at very old information on our site (which should be taken down, as it is not referring to the current product, which does indeed do a good job of recovering deleted files). As mentioned, I cannot find that text anywhere, when navigating through the various pages, so I am thinking that you have found this old information via an old link or something (not unusual, but something we can track down)...I am able to find references to not being able to recover deleted files in OS X for our older versions of Data Rescue (which we still support and therefore still have pages up for on our website), but this is old info for an older product which has been replaced...
That was indeed the case for a long time (OS X recovery of deleted files was very, very hard to do, since OS X works very differently than any previous OS's from Apple)... However, with the improvements we made in Data Rescue II, we are seeing good progress with recovery of deleted files.
I'm a bit shocked by your dismissal of every good review on VT, our website, every magazine and other places for Data Rescue II.. Just a few weeks ago, Data Rescue II was in the spotlight during the Quicken update issue (just google Quicken Data Rescue).. We helped a huge number of Quicken users recover their deleted databases...
It's one thing to say you're weary of a few testimonies, but to call all of the posts on VT "BS and marketing hype" is really quite different. Did you know the FBI uses this product? The CIA, DoD, Dept of Homeland Defense, heck, even Apple has a worldwide site license which covers all Apple employees...They don't decide to buy site licenses for software (and continue to annually maintain the licenses) if it was all marketing hype and BS...
The facts remain that Data Rescue is indeed the top-rated data recovery software for the Mac. Deleted files, non-mounting drives, corrupted drives and other issues are reasons that people buy Data Rescue and then sing its praises afterwards. Heck, you can even look at our Hall-Of-Fame posts from happy customers that took the time out of their busy lives to say thanks, send a note and even a pic of themselves for us to post. I can guarantee you that those are not fake.
Your final note is something that we always tell people... Backup as much and as often as you can... But you know what? The vast majority don't do it and that is why there is a need for products like Data Rescue.
If you ever get a chance, come by our booth at any tradeshow we attend.. Stand around for about 10 minutes and you'll be surprised to see random people come up to us and say stuff like, "Just wanted to thank you guys.. you saved all my data a few months ago.. Thanks" (I've even had people wait 5-10 minutes, while i've been giving a demo to someone else.. just so they could tell me thanks personally..)--- They aren't playing to a crowd, trying to win a t-shirt or anything, they just want to extend a "thanks" to us for what our product did for them-
I'm saddened that you consider all of this BS and marketing hype, because what you'd find out is, we really do have some of the happiest, most loyal customers and I'm very proud to be a part of a little lifesaver we call Data Rescue..
Sincerely,
Gordon from Prosoft...
