The wonderful thing about iPhoto is you can always EXPORT THE ORIGINAL file.....so no matter what your apparent problem is you can always get your original back in a folder of your choice to play with it the way you want!! You can import your files or just have iPhoto look at a folder of your choice so no importing is done. Its clear most folks having problems haven't even explored all the features and preferences of iPhoto.
