I have used Open Office on a my work PC for a year or so, and after trying it on a Mac with X11, I happily found NeoOffice for my Mac and have used it as my primary text and spreadsheet app. for about 2 years.
Overall, I'm very happy with this stable and very functional software package. The text and spreadsheet applications are trouble free. In contrast to another reviewer, the "export to PDF" function is one of my favourite features. One click gives PDF's that are precise and predictable and saved in the same folder as the originals.
The spreadsheet app. has a vast number of functions and I find it useful to search the web for sample Excel formulas that can be applied in NeoOffice with little modification, if any. I can easily create simple well formatted spreadsheets, just as I like them.
With both NeoOffice and OO, it is a pity that their developers are too busy copying the market leader (MS Office) to provide a novel alternative to the MS concept of DTP programs. Even though they are not carbon copies of MS, everything is more or less the same.
Spreadsheet has a few minor handling irritations, like earlier MS Office had.
My only complaints about the Text application:
Styles and Formatting features could be much simpler and easier to use.
Mac appearance is not fully implemented. Looks a bit clunky.
Colour palette is limited.
Track changes function of MS Word is sadly missed.
OO / NeoOffice like all word processor apps. should pay much more attention to references and footnotes for scholarly work; such as, providing a built-in database for references, and loadable styles and formats for citations and footnotes.

You can modify the existing color palettes or even create new palettes of your own; see this article in the wiki for details.
MS Office-compatible track changes is also available; see the "Changes" sub-menu in the Edit menu.
