I used Wiretap Pro for a couple years and loved it. The no-frills program did everything I wanted it to do and worked reliably. As soon as Ambrosia came out with Wiretap Studio, I upgraded immediately, and I've had one problem after another ever since. The new Wiretap is much more unstable: I've made several recordings only to have them show up as unplayable. Wiretap won't play them, no other program I have will play them. I finally have to trash 'em. There went three hours of work. The new Wiretap is also much too sensitive to internal volume levels. Recordings from sources like iTunes and RealPlayer often end up overmodulated and distorted (even when they sound fine as I'm recording them). The only way around this seems to be to turn down the volume of whatever program is providing the sound to be recorded. Unfortunately, if I want to schedule a recording for a time when I won't be around to monitor the recording, I can't control the volume of the internal sound source. I've scheduled recordings of several dozen internet radio programs, and nearly half have been distorted through overmodulation. The old Wiretap never had this problem. Even when referring to the "LivePreview" (which lags so much as to be almost worthless), the volume levels indicated on screen do not really match what's being recorded--I regularly have to "under-record" to avoid distortion. But my biggest gripe with the new Wiretap is the "Library." Previously, when I made a recording--whether with the help of the scheduler or manually--the resulting recording was automatically saved in the format of my choice (AIFF, MP3, etc.). The second I stopped recording, I had an MP3 file ready to load on my iPod or e-mail to a friend. Now, every recording is saved in Wiretap's own format to its "Library." Before I can play back the recording, I have to wait while a waveform editor opens the recording (which can take a while when dealing with a 4-hour radio program!). Then I have to wait again--sometimes up to an hour--while Wiretap exports the recording into a format that other programs can read (like MP3). These extra steps to getting a usable finished file are extremely time consuming and bothersome--and they eat up a lot of computer memory. I don't need the library! I wish Wiretap Studio had a way to turn that feature off. I paid $30 to "upgrade" and ended up with a barrel of headaches. Wiretap has a few snazzy new features (like the ability to edit a recording before exporting to MP3), but they still haven't worked out the kinks. Until they do, I'll go back to my old, reliable Wiretap. What a waste.

Disappointing - moki

Bryan,

We're sorry to hear about your frustration and disappointment. WireTap Studio is a product we spent a lot of time designing and developing, and making sure we "got it right". We've won some major awards, and as you've seen from the other comments here on VersionTracker, its received a lot of praise and good feedback.

With that said, the issues you're having aren't the norm, so I'd like to ask that you contact our tech support at help@AmbrosiaSW.com and provide them with this information, so they can assist you.

In terms of your usability suggestions and comments, we hope you'll give WireTap Studio another chance, by watching our video tutorials, located here:

...and also by providing your feedback and suggestions to our support staff. We'll do our best to address your concerns. Regardless, we appreciate your feedback and support, and for taking the time to post your thoughts. We hope you'll give WireTap Studio a second chance.

Disappointing - jerrygreenfield

I had the same experience, plus a couple more problems when I tried to use Wiretap Pro while Studio was still installed and wouldn't give up its hold on resources. In order to use Good Ole Wiretap Pro again, I had to do a careful uninstall of Wiretap everything and then reinstall Wiretap Pro, which is still a good program. That was when I was still running Tiger. I've got Leopard now and won't try Wiretap Studio again until I'm satisfied by other users that the application is really ready to go--without that ridiculous Library stage.
