More like Thunderbird than Classic Eudora

Feedback Type:  Commentary

Contributed by: Rider Monday, December 31 2007 @ 01:44 PM PST

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: NO

This product seems to be Thunderbird using Eudora icons only. It's nothing like the classic Eudora 6.2.4 which I am using. I realize that Qualcomm dropped the ball, but what we classic Eudora users were hoping is that the open-source community would continue to develop Eudora as it always has been, rather than making a tweaked version of Thunderbird.

And why wouldn't (and shouldn't) it be more like Thunderbird, a program that is being actively developed, based on modern standards, and almost infinitely extensible via add-ins, than Eudora, a program that never fully migrated to Mac OS X, has not had one significant new feature in 6 years, is crash and corruption-prone, and still even uses resource forks?

You're just lucky they didn't completely abandon both you and the Eudora nameplate.

P.S. The Classic Eudora code is worthless. No open-source project in 2008 is going to want to deal with code that goes back to the 1990s, that was *barely* made Carbon compliant; it would need to be scrapped completely and rewritten from scratch in Cocoa. Look what Microsoft got themselves into with Office. If Qualcomm didn't want to do it, what makes you think anyone else wants to?

More like Thunderbird than Classic Eudora - Rider

Look, I'm not a developer and don't know the nuances of code, etc., but I've been using Eudora for 15 years and this product is nothing like the classic Eudora. As I mentioned, I know Qualcomm dropped the ball but many classic Eudora users don't want to switch to a tweaked Thunderbird model and were hoping for a real continuation (not a conversion).
