10.5.1 won't sleep wit UPS connected via USB

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Over One Year

I have an APC Back-UPS LS 700 connected to a G4/933 via USB. The Mac is running an erase-install of 10.5, updated to 10.5.1. OS X sees the UPS just fine without any special software installed (e.g. PowerChute), and it displays a good power percentage in the menu bar. OS X also recognizes the exact model of my UPS. The problem: if UPS is connected via USB, the Mac will not go into sleep. As soon as everything gets quiet and the monitors go black, it wakes up again - nothing of note in the system.log as to why it woke up. However, if I disconnect the USB cable going to the UPS, the Mac will go to sleep just fine. Anyone else see this? Any ideas how to fix it?

10.5.1 won't sleep wit UPS connected via USB - djf456

Neither will my MacPro (early 2008) sleep under 10.5.5 using only Apple's UPS monitoring software IF the USB cable is plugged in. I think this is an Apple OS problem.
