Safari 3.0 but no Bookmarks?

Feedback Type:  Troubleshooting Report

Contributed by: mjnewman Sunday, November 25 2007 @ 06:07 PM PST

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: 1-6 months

Recommend Product: YES

I have tried everything with the new Combo Updater to 10.4.11 for PPC but I can't get my Safari 3.0 to keep any Bookmarks. I eliminated AcidSearch 0.62 and Safari Extender 1.6.6--neither of which works yet with 10.4.11 and Safari 3.0 for PPC--but even when I import my Bookmarks from a copy on my external hard drive, even when I replace the username/Library/Safari/bookmarks.plst and the username/Library/preferences/com.apple.Safari.plst, even when I try the stand-alone download for the updater instead of the Software Update method, none of it seems to make any difference. I can't keep any Bookmarks. Does anybody out there have any other suggestions?

I have no idea if it will help, but you don't mention having trashed ~/Library/Caches/Safari or .../Metadata/Safari. You might as well empty that entire Caches folder - the caches will be rebuilt as needed when you use the apps concerned.

If that doesn't help, keep looking in Application Support, InputManagers and Internet Plug-ins, locally and globally.

Thanks but that hasn't worked either. I seem to be the only person out there with this problem. I guess I can't update.

Try... Create a new, clean, admin account, "dummy". Log out and then in as "dummy". Whether the problem exists or does not in that account will at least tell you if the problem is due to something in your account or is global, narrowing down where you need look for the glitch.

I just created a "dummy" account and that had the same problem. I can't save any website addresses and none show up under my bookmark icon in the bookmarks bar. Thus, it seems to be global and I haven't narrowed anything down.

I am using DotMac Menu and AllBookmarks. I doubt either one is doing anything but I thought I would throw that out there for comments, if any. I've not heard anyone else complain about them.

Also, I believe my bookmarks are in fact being stored somewhere as when I use SafariBookmarkChecker they do show up. Nevertheless, they don't exist under Safari 3.04's "Show all bookmarks." icon (not even the one that says Bookmarks Bar even though they are actually there in the Bookmarks Bar!) and I cannot save any bookmarks period.

Help!!!

One of the people I support has upgraded to 10.4.11 and the computer no longer functions with mail or safari. It is running like a dog and It appears that the only way forward is backwards and a clean install!

I have checked all the usual and find that everything appears to be nice and tidy. Virus checking is in place and the machine is clean from that respect.

Before I resort to a clean install, I will try Apple support. I know the machine is cool as it was rebuilt only a few weeks back after a hard disk crash and everything points to something being skewed in the upgrade.
