Battery Backup Issue . . .

Feedback Type:  Troubleshooting Report

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Over One Year

I ran AppleJack using "applejack auto reboot". AppleJack was doing its thing; it got through the "repair disks" phase (no problems found) and then it got to step 2, "repair permissions." The CPU halted and the system shut down during this process. That was freaky—the repair permissions process hadn't finished, and moreover I didn't tell AppleJack to shut down the computer. I started the computer again, tried applejack auto reboot", and the computer shut down again. I noticed an error message before the CPU was halted:

shutdown: halt by root: Shutting down due to power loss!

Power loss? The only power loss was the computer shutting itself down. I have my Mac plugged into an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), with a USB cable from the UPS to the Mac. The cable allows the UPS to communicate to the Mac that it's running off of battery power and how much battery time remains.

Although having the UPS plugged into the Mac had never caused this problem to happen before, naturally I decided to unplug the USB cable. Success! AppleJack was able to get through the whole cache cleaning process and clean an individual user's cache. After the computer restarted, I plugged the USB cable back into my Mac and it booted normally into the Finder.

I'm not certain whether something changed in the OS or whether the UPS is communicating differently with the Mac now. I'm currently running Mac OS X v10.4.10 on the PowerMac, but I'm pretty sure I've run AppleJack since upgrading to 10.4.10.

I have seen this issue on Power Mac G4s (Mirror Drive Doors Dual 1.25GHz) and an iMac G5 that are using APC UPS Battery Backups with the USB data cable connecting the Computers with their own APC UPS.

I will try upgrading to 10.4.11 and see if the problem still exists.

I hope this helps someone.

Yes, I have the same issue with a UPS connected to a PowerMac G5...thanks for your help in determining the problem. I was scratching my head about this one for a while. Couldn't figure out why AppleJack was shutting down right in the middle of the checks. Maybe AppleJack will be fixed of this soon.

This problem does still indeed exist after upgrading to 10.4.11.

Hopefully AppleJack can be updated to resolve this issue.

Hmm, interesting. I'd never thought of taking the UPS cable off. I had chocked it up to flakey firmware in my Quad G5.

Anyway, as it is now in Leopard it's no go even if I wanted to use it. This is one of my 'must install' apps I recommend to everyone. I dearly miss it.

Interesting indeed. I have a Mirrored Drive Doors dual 1.25 GHz, connected to an APC UPS (Back UPS XS 1000), including the USB cable connection (plugged into a powered USB hub), and I haven't seen this problem when running Applejack under OS 10.4.10 and 10.4.11. My Mac is seeing the UPS though the USB cable, according to the Energy Saver prefpane. I may try the experiment of plugging the UPS's USB cable directly into one of the Mac's built-in USB ports, but thought I'd post my configuration first, in case it's the powered USB hub that's making the difference, so other people can try that configuration.

YMMV but I think it is best to run Applejack after unplugging peripheral devices. I found that booting into SUM with the Verizon aircard plugged in, causes problems for the boot into SUM. I saw USB errors.

When I run Applejack, I first unplug all the USB and F/W devices, then boot to SUM and run Applejack.

Doing it this way, I never had a problem.

Looks like Digital Jim and I both came across the same problem (and the fix) almost around the same time. I blogged about the fix a few weeks before Jim's post.

In fact, you know what? Most of Digital Jim's post is directly ripped off from my article. I'm flattered that Jim found my post useful, but in the future I hope he learns to cite his sources rather than copying and pasting from them and claiming them as his own work.
