Should I be seeing icons? It works, but no icons which makes it more difficult to identify files.

•••   It's up to you - Andreas..

Set it to folder "Xxxxx" and the icon will be that of folder "Xxxxx". If folder "Xxxxx" does not have an icon either supplied by the OS (as, say, /Applications or /Utilities) or a custom icon supplied by you, then you will only see a plain vanilla icon. Add a custom icon to the folder concerned and it will show in the Dock.

Identifiable icon or plain vanilla icon, though, you still get the pop-up menu which this is really for.

You misunderstood, I don't see any icons in the popup list (or contextual menu).
