Pref to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally

So now what happened to those poor people who thought turning their phone off meant they were actually turning their phone off? Did AT&T forgive them of their ridiculous international roaming data charges?

I think the iPhone is a cool product and all, but Apple should have thought of half of this stuff before they even had a working prototype. Why weren't weather and stock listings re-orderable before when clocks were until today? Didn't at least one person say "Hey, we shouldn't use up data when the phone is off because sometimes people leave their houses!".

Gimme a break.
