I don't see any reasons here or on Intego's site for why someone might want to pay for this "virtual safe" product ($50 for a single-user license) instead of using standard OS X encrypted disk images for free. Is this just a front-end to the latter?

Yes. It's just a front end for sparse images. All your getting is the interface. It also created an alias I couldn't delete and was frustrating.Disk utility does the same and is actually easier, at least for me.
