I tried Geekbench. It seems cool, but I can't justify paying $20 for it.

I have reconsidered! The value offered on the Geekbench web site makes the 19.95 price tag worth while. GeekBench works well, is supported on multiple platforms, and offers a well-designed and well-maintained web site where typical results for a particular machine can be found.
