Google Earth CONSTANTLY crashes on Intel iMac

Feedback Type:  Troubleshooting Report

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

This problem pre-dates my downloading of version 4.1.7076.4458. Google Earth is CONSTANTLY crashing on my iMac (details below under system info), and it is taking my computer down in a hard way when it does.

My feeling is that the problem is related to buffering the incoming data stream. The crashes almost always seem to occur when I am trying to do a fly-by or manually scan terrain. First the mouse becomes unresponsive... and then anywhere from 10-30 seconds afterwards the computer powers down.

I realize this version is beta, but I downloaded it yesterday to see if it would alleviate the crash problems I am experiencing. It did not... in fact it seems to have gotten worse. Prior to downloading this version, I was sometimes able to use Force-Quit to exit Google Earth but salvage the shell environment. However, in the past 24 hours I have had the computer go to black screen six times -- requiring me to unplug the computer, hit the reset button, reboot, defrag the hard disk, and then run Google Earth again.

If the dam thing runs on Linux (which I know it does, I have used it), it should be a fairly simple matter to port it to MacOS X. So what's up? This software CLEARLY is not ready for prime-time on the Macintosh.

Hire some skilled Macintosh people, please...
System Info:iMac 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2.5 GB of RAM MacOS X 10.4.10

Google Earth CONSTANTLY crashes on Intel iMac - claudej

I'm on an iMac and don't have any problem since over a year with Google Earth. And I have tried every update except the one tracking Santa :)

Google Earth CONSTANTLY crashes on Intel iMac - billmatthews

I've been running GoogleEarth for some time on my MacBook Pro and my Mac Pro at home and it's never crashed on me. Perhaps there is a conflict on your particular system?

Google Earth CONSTANTLY crashes on Intel iMac - aeonmcn

I'm getting the same crashing behaviour on my Intel MacBook Pro (OS X 10.4.10). Entire system freezes. I've only been getting these crashes since I installed this new version (4.2.180.1134). Same thing is happening to a friend of mine with an Intel iMac.

Grateful for any light anyone might be able to shed on the problem.

Thanks

Same thing happens on my computer. It happens about every 20 minutes...more often if I'm really actively mousing around.

What's your graphics card? - dwebb-versiontracker

These kinds of crashes are usually caused by graphics driver bugs. What graphics card are you using?
