I love they way LaunchBar works. I can quickly switch between any application on my machine. I can browse folders. I can find address book entries and use them in the current application. It's a great launcher, and very stable. The way it works is just elegant. I paid for it years ago, and have got my money's worth several times over.
It's missing something that Quicksilver and Butler and DragThing all have. Hotkey launches. I have used one key press to flip between iTerm, Mail, Safari and BBEdit for years. I use these applications all the time, every day, and need to switch between them all the time, every day. By hitting F1, I quickly go to iTerm. I hear an email message come in, and I hit F2. Back to code editing, hit F5 for BBEdit.
I don't have to hit ctl-space,<pause> "it", return....ctl-space,<pause>,"ma", return ....ctl-space,<pause>,"bb", return
I would rather hit F1, F2, F5.
I can relearn how to flip between these apps, by doing the LaunchBar march, but I'd rather not. So, I've resorted to running LaunchBar and DragThing. I could just use Butler or Quicksilver, they don't do the things LaunchBar does as well. I wish LaunchBar would just add the hotkey feature. Guess I can't have everything.

If you really use those applications all the time (i.e., they are running concurrently), then why not switch between them with LaunchBar'sctrl-space-space?Tuesday, July 31 2007 @ 12:16 PM PDT

You've *resorted* to running both LaunchBar and DragThing?!! I've always used both, for different features, and both are among the handful of utilties that i wouldn't be without. Why are you sounding like it's a hardship to run two really great programs, each with its own set of incredibly useful features?Tuesday, July 31 2007 @ 03:55 PM PDT

THANKS for the comments, and the good suggestions. The Assign Abbreviation thing works, but that does not get me back to the single keystroke I have with F1, F2, F3, etc. I still have to bring LB to the front, type something, and then hit return. The new LB feature, where you hold the last key down to execute the shortcut, is pretty cool, but still not the single keystroke I'm looking for.
Similarly, ctl space, space requires more keystrokes and it requires me to watch and choose which app I want to switch to. Cmd-tab gives me that, right in the OS with no assistance needed from LB.
Running both LaunchBar and DragThing seems a bit much. Both apps use memory and CPU resources, and not insignificant resources at that. They are both pretty cool utils, tho.
I guess I just feel that LaunchBar ought to be my launch application. That's what Butler, QuickSilver and DragThing strive to be. LaunchBar is just a lot more stable and elegant than Butler and QuickSilver.
I'll keep using LaunchBar with DragThing, and I promise to quit complaining. It's a pretty good setup.

You can't assign an F key it looks like but you CAN assign a shortcut. Look under Select > Assign Abbreviation after activating LB.Reply to This
