Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: NO

I've never been subjected to as much runaround and useless finger-pointing as I have for the last FOUR DAYS, just trying to get my iMac (intel) to work with this new Maxtor terabyte-brick via Firewire 800, and the horrendous Retrospect software that came with it. I've called Apple, I've called Dantz and searched every forum from here to Timbuktu, and I'm going to just send the thing back and get a Seagate, just so I can use the freebie app from Acronis anyway.

The Maxtor talks with the iMac just dandy via the Firewire 800, the problem is that launching the fabled "One-Touch" - for which this Maxtor is named - results in either a "authenticateuser app" failure (Retrospect) or... absolutely nothing, nada, zip.

Two calls to Seagate's support (Seagate bought Maxtor late last year) resulted in an emailed .iso (which pre-dates the update on this page by THREE YEARS) that also doesn't work!

For the hundreds of bucks I spent for this brick on my desk, it shouldn't take four *&^$%&*-ing days to install it, with no success in sight!

Now I know where this software got its name: in RETROSPECT, I'd have bought something else.

Brand-new Maxtor 1Tb HDD + Retrospect = doorstop/blinking-brick - Jim B

The one-touch button non-functionality is totally a Maxtor problem, NOT Retrospect. Maxtor seems to have a problem being clear about how to make this function.

Brand-new Maxtor 1Tb HDD + Retrospect = doorstop/blinking-brick - siimba55

Hi
My Maxtor TB drove me nuts for a while when trying to use the 800 FW. I had to delete anything and all files related to Maxtor and the included Retro software. Unplug the TB. Install the software fresh again. CHECK you set up manual/info.

The problems are with Maxtor's software and not Retrospect.

Now if you are using Leopard, forget it. Maxtor one touch is not compatible with Leopard. I spoke with one of their techs after upgrading to Leopard. He told me this fact and that there are working to fix the issue. [This Summer is the target date.]

In the meantime there is a work around to get Retro to do "semi-auto" back ups. It requires that you "move" part of the Retro software and double-click it or add it to the dock to set the software into motion.

Better that it works that way for now than not at all. My drive has worked flawlessly since. It can be finicky initially set up. MUST, MUST follow each step exactly right, or drive will not be recognized at all. Button will NOT work with USB set up at all.

Go to:
http://seagate.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/seagate.cfg/php/enduser/prnt_adp.php?p_faqid=2223&p_created=1106162152&p_sid=z6OA5e-i&p_li=

OR the Seagate site directly. Look in Mac Software/hardware. It will tell you what to do step by step.

As far as the 800 FW cable. Look at your manual and follow everything step by step. OR go to the website [Seagate] and get the exact info there.

OR, CALL:800 732 4283 and ask for a second level techncian at [Seagate.]

GLuck!
