I can't believe that Apple still has not provided any way for Filemaker to allow Spotlight to look "within" databases.
Even MICROSOFT provided this fucntionality with Entourage!

Apple's spotlight only works when each piece of data is in a separate file. That's the way it is architected, so it applies to FileMaker or anything else. If Entrourage allows spotlight, then it is because they save a single file for every email message you have.Would you like FileMaker to make a separate file for every row in your database? If so, then spotlight could index FM databases

Sorry, but that does not apply. Entourage does keep all of its data, contacts, emails, calendar items, etc. in one giant database. Entourgae has used the programming interface to Spotlight so that individual items (emails, contacts, etc) WITHIN the Entourage database do show up as seperate items within a Spotlight search. (Frankly, for Microsoft, I am quite immpressed how they have used a Mac-only feature such as this). So, if MS can do it, I am surprised that Filemaker cannot.
Of course, it would be a bit more complex with FM (what consitutes a spotlight "hit"?, and what consitutes a "record" that gets shown?), but it should still be implemented to SOME degree.

Unfortunately, it _does_ apply. Spotlight has no concept with finer granularity than a file, and it only invokes indexing plugins on a per-file basis. What Entourage is doing is making a directory full of stub files to represent each record. That may be handy for small tables, but your space consumption will explode as the table grows. Every record, no matter how large, is taking not only its space in the host app _and_ in the spotlight index, but a separate 4k block that does nothing except provide indexability. I can certainly see FileMaker (a subsidiary of Apple, yes, but an independent entity that makes its own business decisions) thinking that's not a good place to put development and support resources at this time.Wednesday, July 11 2007 @ 05:56 AM PDT

The dbase designer could simply determine if, and to what extent, Spotlight is aware of the database, and what level of granularity is supported.Ueah - if it tried to do everything it would get ridiculous and cause an undue burden on a database. But to have NO interface at ALL to Spotlight is ridiculous.
