To add my to my posting below, I came home today to find that I had no Internet connection. My kids had turned the Mac off, without shutting it down properly. We already lectured them on shutting down vs. hitting the Power switch, but it doesn't seem to stick... When I booted up again, I had no connection. Not thinking of *censored*tail, I went to my Network System Preferences, to diagnose the problem. I tried adding a new connection and after giving it a name and clicking on OK, I got the spinning wheel of death. I then remembered *censored*tail, so I went back to reset my settings to the defaults, and that took care of the problem. I, for one, I'm doing without *censored*tail for now.
