Apple does this already - semaja2

This is true but not completely true, if you simply want to use the laptop as a server with no extra devices you need a program like this, the same goes for if you want to move the machine from one meeting to another with out turning it off/sleeping.

Or the plain classic examples i get: I dont want torrents to stop working when i walk around the house, I like to use my laptop as a big ipod

What if you want to use BlueTooth peripherals, and wish to avoid plugging in a USB cable?

It appears that the only way to do this with a closed lid portable is via this utility.

This info is inaccurate. According to apple tech support, if you connect a USB keyboard and a USB mouse to your macbook or macbook pro, then insomnia won't be necessary. But other USB devices won't do the trick.
