None of these troubleshooting apps allows you to do disk repairs from the startup volume. This is a problem unless you have a different boot volume kicking around. Solution: The cleanest, monthly maintenance app by far: AppleJack. Oh, and it's free! If you want to tweak your other system settings, make sure you know what you're doing with these other apps. AppleJack is a no-brainer. I'm not bashing Mac Pilot b/c it's generally good at what it does. Simply preference for AJ d/t disk repair option.

Do not know if AppleJack is better, since I have never used MacPilot. But I totally agree that AppleJack is the best application to do easily and quickly and reliably all the maintenance routines. Great application, a real life saverMonday, June 04 2007 @ 05:32 AM PDT

Performing disk repairs on your live startup disk is VERY dangerous. You can do this without a startup disk however. Just boot to single user mode. Hold down Command-S while booting. You'll be brought to a command line, and it'll give you a line stating an fsck command (ie. /sbin/fsck -fy). This will repair your drive. Simply restart the system after it completes.Reply to This
