Just to be sure and not get any unexpected problems,
restart your mac holding down the SHIFT key until the Safe BOOT login appears.
Install your update the restart one last time.

NO problems here! - ted.g.burton_dotmac

Also no problems here, even using Software Update without running Disk Utility before or after. The tales below are unlike my experiences for the last 20 years with Macs. I have never, ever had problems with a Software Update from Apple.
