Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: 1-6 months

Recommend Product: NO

I wish I had whatever "ssX" the other reviewers seem to be so happy with - because the one I have is buggy and unstable.

What do I hate about this program?

First of all: the mother of all memory leaks. Whenever I leave this thing open, gigabyte after gigabyte of my hard drive's free space slowly disappear as more and more swapfiles are written. Opening this program is a great way to use up all your hard drive's free space in a few short hours, and I don't mean with downloads.

Then: once it's consumed your hard drive, you start getting errors that say "Connection failed". Nothing of the sort is happening - it just can't write to your hard drive.

So you quit & restart the program. SURPRISE! IT HAS FORGOTTEN ALL YOUR IN-PROGRESS DOWNLOADS! Hope you remember what you had in progress, because your download screen is now empty, empty, empty and you'll have to search for everything you were downloading, find it all over again, and re-queue it all by hand! Nice, huh?

Of course, that's assuming the people you were downloading from even still show up in the search results. Because it doesn't find people who are clearly on line because they turn up in other searches, and then if I open their share files I can see that they are sharing the files I was looking for, it just didn't show them in the search results no matter how many times I tell it to search again. It seems pretty random who it finds and who it doesn't.

The reason I'm writing this review is because all of the above just happened to me in the last 20 minutes.

There is no soulseek client for OS X.

"Stable"? "Reliable"? NO WAY!! Buggy & annoying. - contato19

hi there

i think i might have found a solution for some of the problems

i was using ssx for a long while before running into any problems. a few days ago, after i reorganized my mac and my apps (putting files in the right folders, configuring download folders of browsers and p2p programs), i started having many of the problems that you've described: connection failed in most of my files, whenever i terminated the app it forgot all my downloads, and, well, became rather useless.

i spent many hours searching the internet for a solution, especially since it was apparently all of a sudden, but to no avail. then, while monitoring ssx console, i realized that, for some reason, the app just couldn't write in the folder i specified for the downloads. after repairing disk permissions and having no success again, i tried to switch my download folder back to the program default. magically, my files began downloading and, when i quit the app, it remembered all the downloads.

so, i guess you just have to keep your download folder as the default. at least it solved the problems for me.

other than that, i love soulseex and find it to be one of the best p2p apps out there
