VLC - does it play all zones of DVDs?

I had thought that VLC would play any zone, but 9 times out of 10, I cannot get it to play a DVD, that I am assuming is in a zone outside the zone my computer is stuck in. Is there any way to use VLC to play all zones in spite of the computer's forced limitations?
