Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Have Not Tried

Recommend Product: NO

This seems like a joke.
OS X already has RAID 0, so what's the point?
If it can't do RAID 5, then it's worthless.
Maybe for an older OS???

I just moved my drives over from a PC server I had running into a G4 I got, but the Adaptec 2410sa won't work on Mac, and there are no SATA SMART RAID Controllers for the Mac.
I had to get a non-hardware RAIS Controller (SIIG) from OWC.
Now, how can I get RAID 5?
Does OS X Server do it?
For now, I will just run unprotected.

RAID 5 on a PowerMac G4? Best to use a FireWIre 800 external HD enclosure with its own built-in hardware RAID 5 controller.

Here's one example:

There are rumors the software RAID 5 will be part of OS X 10.5 (Leopard) but even if that's true, who knows if it will work on G4.

If RAID 5 is going to be in Leopard, they haven't added it yet as of the WWDC build.

I use a Raid 5 on a G4 Mac with 8 external SATA drives and a Raid Controller Rocket Raid 1820A (I think RR2220 will also work on a G4 Mac). Please see homepage www.highpoint-tech.com for more Mac products!

Try Drobo - robbyx--2008

Check out Drobo (www.drobo.com). The Drobo box is only $500 (compared to $1300+ for a hardware RAID 5 enclosure). It's effortless to setup, works great with a Mac, and offers the same benefits as RAID 5. The case supports up to four drives. After searching for a suitable RAID 5 solution, I went with Drobo. It's the best option I could find.

Drobo? It IS beautiful, but... - bosskev

...it only connects via USB 2.0, a maximum of 20-22MB/second transfer rate. While I wouldn't be so rude as to call that "slow", it is several orders of magnitude slower than other transfer methods, e.g., FireWire 400 or 800 or SATA. If/when they ever release a FW or SATA version, I'll be first in line to buy one.

In the meantime, yeah, I'm highly discouraged that there has not yet been a software RAID 5 solution for the Mac. I'd thought SoftRaid would have done so long ago, but, as of today, their Website still says "We do not have anything to announce yet." regarding RAID 5.

Umm... Maybe I'm missing something here. Why would you want software RAID 5? I know we're talking about dual and quad core Intel processors here but do you really want software RAID5?

I'll take my RAID on a card any day of the week and a software mirror if I have to. But I sure as heck don't want Mac OS X or any other OS calculating RAID parity data while crunching on other data. God forbid the OS crash and the parity data get hosed.

XServe RAID - Macleod

XServe RAID supports RAID 5, but not 6, and has sufficient power to do all the parity calculations on board.
