Scrivener vs. DEVONthink Pro?

Feedback Type:  Commentary

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Less than a month

Recommend Product: YES

I've been trying the demo and this looks like a great, great app that already has a loyal following. However, I already have DEVONthink Pro that, altho designed for a different purpose, has many of the same features as Scrivener.

Does Scrivener offer any advantages over DEVONthink Pro? This is not a criticism or a rhetorical question but an honest question to the developer and users from someone thinking about purchasing but also trying to use as few writing tools as possible.

Thanks!

Scrivener vs. DEVONthink Pro? - KB_LitNLat

Hi Jeff,

I'm the developer of Scrivener. I think the answer to your question really depends on what you want to do. DTP is a fantastic app and will always beat Scrivener as a general-purpose database for collecting anything and everything, as that is what it was designed to do. Scrivener, on the other hand, is designed for handling projects that are geared towards some sort of final published output. So Scrivener has things such as a split view that allows you to view two different documents at the same time, and has more advanced outlining capabilities (and a corkboard). If archiving and general data collection and maintenance is what you are after, use DevonThink. If you want to write, say, a novel, script, academic paper or article whilst referring to other materials and structuring as you go, Scrivener would (hopefully) better fit the bill.

A lot of Scrivener users are actually DevonThink owners and use the two programs in tandem (I use DT, too, as it goes). They tend to collect random snippets that don't go anywhere yet and the rest of their life in DT, and then transfer anything needed for a particular project into Scrivener for composing a draft. Scrivener can fit snuggly in between DevonThink and Word, I guess.

My suggestion would be just to check out the 30 day trial and make use of Scrivener's lively user forum (the users are all very helpful) to see if it meets your needs. And you can also e-mail me any questions directly, of course.

Hope that helps a little.
All the best,
Keith

Yes it does, thanks Keith. I assume it would also be helpful if using Apple's Pages for final output.

Thanks,
Jeff
