Why does what ought to be a simple application require an installer? And why does that installer require my password?

We needed an installer to put all the sound files, presets, etc., in the proper folders. The password might not have been necessary, but it was an option in Apple's installer program, and I think we needed it to copy files into certain directories. What's the concern? It's not like we ever see a copy of your password.
