After trying all manner of workarounds to address startup failures on a G4 with 10.4, I figured out that a Retrospect-installed item, called Retrorun, in startup items folder was the cause. After I removed that item, and for that matter removed everything associated with Retrospect, the problem was fixed. Who would have thought that the backup software was cause of failure??

I think that something else is the cause of your problem. I am using Retrospect successfully on my G4.
