address annoyance

Used Product For: 6-12 months

...and as a long-time Safari user i find the lack of a real address auto-complete function a serious annoyance. having to hit the down arrow or click in a drop-down list to go to the URL Firefox thinks it most likely i want to go to is an unnecessary step that i resent anew every time i type the beginning of a URL into the address field. in Safari, i type "ver" and hit Return and here i am at versiontracker. in Firefox, i type "ver" and unless i press the down arrow or click the URL i want in the drop-down list, hitting Return winds me up at verrents.com (the closest thing the 'net can find to ver.com, i guess). never heard of it.

Windows users are used to doing things the hard way; many of them even seem to secretly like it. but we Mac users prefer things to work in sensible and efficient ways that don't require us to take unnecessary steps to get from A to B. this address issue wouldn't be such a big deal if it didn't raise its ugly head every single time one starts to type a URL, but it does, and all that clicking and down-arrow pressing adds up to a good amount of time over a period of years of computing. why must we do that??

address annoyance - ptkdude

Ironically, the lack of an address drop-down is exactly what I can't stand about Safari!

Indeed, it's odd that this vital feature is decried as a bug. At least half the time, the autocomplete URL is wrong and I end up having to delete it, or else it autocompletes just as I'm hitting the Return key and goes to the wrong place. This is one reason I don't use Safari anymore.

I can't stand that Safari's autofill doesn't take you to a domain, it takes you to some deeply buried page within the domain.

In other words, if I type "ver", it doesn't pop up Versiontracker.com, which would make sense; it pops up versiontracker.com/whatever/deeply/buried/page/i/visited/sometime/last/week

Useless compared to a popup menu that lets me pick one.

I will agree with people who argue that Firefodx is slow compared to Safari, but that's _all_ Safari has going for it. (Okay, that and Bonjour items in the Bookmarks screen)
