Backup your FMPro 8.5

Feedback Type:  Usage Tip

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: Over One Year

Recommend Product: YES

I purchased FileMaker Pro 8.5 over the web. When I had to re-install, I checked my email, found the email with my order, then clicked the link to re-download the software. Unfortunately, FileMaker doesn't allow one to do that after 30 days. Called tech support, they have bankers hours. Shame on them for not allowing me to re-download my software at any time.

Wasn't that spelled out when you bought the program? If so (which is very likely), then you should have noted that and kept an archive copy of your download. (That's a good idea, in any case--I archive every program I download.) Don't slam FileMaker for your own error.

Here is a little news flash for you. Even if it was "spelled out," poor service is not excused by writing poor service into the agreement. This is a problem with many software companies, and sheep like you seem to believe that since they told ahead of time that they offer poor service, it is the consumers fault.

Filemaker has been recycling minimal feature upgrades as a "new version" for years. Filemaker's constant high priced "upgrades" are a scam. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to use real dialog boxes with check boxes and radio buttons? But, Filemaker is, no doubt, holding back on that for yet another, future, high priced upgrade.

FileMaker has lots of competition and remains the top selling database. Clearly their actual customers believe the product is worth the price they charge. Regardless, this really has nothing to do with the fact that the person should have backed up his software. And I'll bet if he called back during business hours, he'd get a new download link. I've talked with FileMaker staff before and they've always been helpful.
