From the Developer:DarkAdapted is free, too, unless you need the Pro features. And the free version of DarkAdapted offers far more functionality than rgGamma (the program to which you linked).
This app is 8 MB because it's a Universal Binary. There's quite a lot packed into that 4 MB executable, if you need it.
And if you don't need it, you don't need it. :-)
