Existing users, 
This is the most used program in the Windows community but for the OSX user it is a PITA. Slow downloads and a system resource hog. I have a 3Ghz MacPro, 8Gig of RAM and 9Mps Covet cable connection and if I see 60Kbs with 10 files in the download queque I'm lucky.
With Transmission I see 600Kbs. The ONLY thing Azureus has going for it is that it makes torrents but once made, you're forced to run Azureus for several weeks just to get them seeded all the while suffering from slow download speeds.
I'm a big P2P user and I *do not* recommend Azureus. The author(s) need to get serious with this P2P application if they want Mac users to actually use it.
So far nothing beats Transmission for P2P downloading.

I can only assume you're not capping your total upload stream (about 65-70% of theoretical maximum is about right). 10 concurrent downloads is spreading yourself too thin IMO and certainly any BT tracker admin's but if you're a determined leecher there's no reason why you can't d/l at close to your maximum if the particular swarms you're in support it.
I've never used Transmission but I'll bet it caps your upstream out of the box. Last time I checked Azureus's set up wizard, when it asks for your bandwidth (in order to set a cap) it's the upstream figure it's after but it is not made clear.
