I long ago adopted the policy of partitioning my HD with 2 bootable volumes. Whenever an update comes along to OSX I install onto the back-up volume first. with Repair Permissions before and after.
Today was no exception, and the update was fine on the back-up volume. I also checked the CPU usage, no issues there. So, conclusion = safe to update the default start-up volume.
Next I repeated the process on the primary drive. Again no problems.
I feel sorry for those with difficulties, but regular permissions repairs are a life-saver.
