This is the same as charging for the oxygen we breathe. Finding files on a computer is a necessity, not a luxury - don't charge for it.

I would say, governing by other responses to your software, as well as the blatant obviousness of charging for something which Spotlight/OS X does fine on its own, is not only embarrassing on your part, but a downright con also. You're relying on people who know no better and I think that's deplorable.Sunday, January 07 2007 @ 05:40 PM PST

Spotlight is certainly convenient for certain kinds of searches. It's also clunky and inefficient. The fact that many additional programs, both shareware and freeware, exist to wrap the Spotlight API into something more user-friendly is strong evidence that many users find Spotlight less-than-ideal. There's a market for "Spotlight enhancers," including MoRu and Houdahspot (shareware) and NotLight and LaserLight (freeware). My reasons for writing NameFind are similar, but I'm not interested in wrapping Spotlight in a nicer GUI; Spotlight is not so helpful if you are trying to find all the jpeg files in your home directory, for instance. NameFind uses a completely different engine. I wrote NameFind to do the kinds of searches I want to do. And I'm offering it for sale in case others are interested in a *different* kind of search tool.
There's nothing immoral about that. I'm not "conning" anyone.

Why shouldn't I charge for NameFind? Am I obligated to give away my work? No, no more than you are obligated to purchase it.There are plenty of free file search tools available--if you don't find NameFind compelling enough to pay for, then use one of them.
