Why is this version 1.0? I have an older version that's numbered 2.0 (2.0b9r5 to be exact, created on May 21, 2005).
I looked at the developer's page but I didn't notice anything which explained the numbering schemeā¦is it because this is the first version that's Universal?

Older version 2.0? - jasocean
There are two different programs being developed that are both named "MplayerOSX" - this one is by a group associated with the acronym "CVS" (version 1.xxx); the other is by "sourceforge" (version 2.xxx). An unfortunate confusion, but neither side is backing down (apparently). It's a matter of opinion, but I think the CVS version is slightly better... although I have not tried this update yet (this should be a new CVS version).

Interesting...thanks for the clarification. If I may ask, why do you prefer the CVS version? I did a search at VersionTracker for Mplayer and while both programs have an overall rating of 4 stars, the sourceforge version has almost 200K downloads (compared to less than 2K for the CVS version.)

No, there are two different versions of MPlayer written by two diffferent authors. Although this program is "only" version 1.0 it seems to me more up to date.Monday, December 11 2006 @ 09:46 PM PST

For what I watch, fansubbed anime in almost every different avi/mkv format possible, CVS version runs almost all of them. 2.x by sourceforge is not nearly as compatable but this view of compatibility will vary greatly depening on who you talk to and what you watch.I watch fan subbed Anime which I unfortunately have to delete when a crappy company picks it up and butchers the translation. Any way, I use VLC unless it does not work, which is usually the subtitles. The VLC vs MplayerOSX vs MplayerOSX2 debate is another hot topic not worth filling this thread but keep in mind we have other posibilities and between the 3 we can play almost anything, we are just waiting for the 1 program that can play them all.

MPlayer OS X began as a side project build around the official MPlayers binaries. So it used it's own version numbers. It's now merged with the official MPlayer which has it's own version number. Hope this explains it :-)Reply to This
