I've been looking for something like this for quite a while - I'm not sure why I haven't come accross MenuMeters before. This is nice and configurable, and the app itself doesn't take much processor on this old mac.

My only criticism is that I wish menumeters had an option to average the network traffic since the last GUI update, rather than displaying an instantaneous value.
