Probably about 99% of the population has a free AOL Instant Messenger account, and you can send SMS messages through AIM (and iChat). Why bother paying for SMS messaging when AIM/iChat can do it for free? Why bother writing an SMS client when there's one already built into iChat? This is a solution in search of a problem that already has a better solution.

Not everyone lives in the USA. SMS on iChat doesn't work everywhere.
