Existing users, 
Showing/hiding icons changes the aspect of the background wallpaper on my system from "Fill screen" to "Stretch to fill screen".
When icons are hidden, app doesn't allow ctrl+click on the desktop.
Others' mileage may vary.
Camouflage
Exposes the desktop by hiding the icons.
